Outdoor dining is encouraged across Newcastle, it's a great way to bring vibrancy to our streets and support local businesses.
If you're thinking about setting up an outdoor dining area, you will need to gain approval.
When to use this form:
- set up a new outdoor dining area linked to an approved food business
- are a new owner of an existing approved area
- plan to make changes to your current outdoor dining setup
- wish to install permanent outdoor furniture or structures.

Application fees
There are no fees payable when you submit your application. We'll invoice you after your application and preferences have been reviewed. If you'd like a fee estimate before applying, search for the application name in our Fees and Charges document.

Submit application
Create or sign into your account
- As part of the application process, you'll be prompted to register or sign in to your account.
- Your account makes it easy to submit applications and requests, track their progress, view outcomes, and make payments all in one place.
- You can find more information and step-by-step guidance on creating a registered user account, as well as access to support services, on our Registration Enquiry article.
Next steps
- Shortly after submitting your application, you will receive an email confirming we've received it, along with an invoice for the application fees.
- Your application and supporting documentation will be reviewed. If we need any additional information to assess your application, we'll contact you.
- If your application needs to be publicly notified, we'll let you know. This step includes:
- An additional advertising fee.
- Displaying a public notice sign in your business window.
- Community feedback being considered as part of the assessment.
- If approved, you will be sent an Outdoor Dining Permit.
- We will place temporary markers to show the boundaries of your approved outdoor dining area. Permanent markers will be installed shortly after.
Time frames
Once your application is submitted, please allow up to 30 days for a decision. Some applications may take longer to process, especially if:
- you're requesting an exemption from policy requirements
- public notification is required
- external referrals or specialist input are needed.
