Approval to Install Onsite Sewer

Onsite systems treat and dispose of domestic wastewater safely where a property isn't connected to the Hunter Water sewer network. They are regulated and inspected by City of Newcastle to protect public health and the environment.

Why it matters

Untreated wastewater can contaminate groundwater and surface water, degrade soils and vegetation, and impact amenity (odours, insects, noise).

How to gain approval

Under Section 68 of the Local Government Act 1993, there are two approvals you require:

Application to Install Onsite Sewer

This is a one off approval that is required before a new system in installed.

Approval to Operate an Onsite Sewer System

Once the system is installed, you must apply for approval to use it.

Choosing the right system
