Stray Dog
Report a Stray Dog
If you find a stray dog within the City of Newcastle area that appears lost or without an owner, report it here.
We will make every effort to reunite a lost dog with its owner. However, there may be situations that are best handled by other parties or fall outside the scope of what City of Newcastle can assist with.
Abandoned or neglected animals
If you find an abandoned animal or litter, please call the RSPCA Inspectors on 1300 278 358.
Cats
City of Newcastle does not collect stray cats. If you have captured a cat and cannot locate the owner, you can take the cat to your local vet to have it scanned for a microchip. Alternatively, you can use social media lost and found pages to locate the owner.

Before you begin
- Check to see if the dog has a collar with owner contact details, you may be able to unite them with their owner.
- It is helpful if a photo of the stray dog is attached to the form, it is common for owners to have already contacted us to report their lost dog. The photo can assist in recognising the dog and returning it to its owner without having to impound the animal.
Location matters!
Providing specific details about the location of the dog helps us locate and collect it quickly. Please include cross streets, house numbers, or identifying landmarks.
Next steps
- You'll receive an acknowledgement with your request number.
- A ranger will contact you to confirm a drop off or collection appointment time.
- Once the dog is dropped off, we will provide immediate care and work to reunite them with their owners or find them a new home through rescue organisations.
- Once your request has been completed, you will receive a notification.
Time frames
- We respond to stray dog collection requests as time permits.
- If you are unable to keep the dog, please take it to a local vet that can hold the dog (call ahead to confirm, as not all vets offer this service). The vet can then coordinate a time to either deliver the dog to the CN Animal Management Facility or arrange for collection.
- Please note that collection times from a vet clinic may be slightly longer, as we prioritise aggressive or still roaming animals.
