Road Naming

Whether you're proposing to name or rename a public or private roadway or pathway, approval is required from both City of Newcastle and the NSW Geographical Names Board.
City of Newcastle manages all road naming proposals through the NSW Geographical Names Board - Place and Road Naming Proposal System.

Next steps

  1. Shortly after submitting your application, you will receive an email confirming we've received it, along with an invoice for the application fees.
  2. Following the approval of the proposed road name by City of Newcastle and NSW Geographical Names Board, we are required to advertise the proposed road name for 15 days, during this time members of the public can provide feedback on the road name.
  3. Following a successful submission process, City of Newcastle will seek formal gazettal of the names from the NSW Geographical Names Board.
  4. Once new road names are finalised and approved, City of Newcastle can allocate official addresses to affected properties where required. For public roads, we will also arrange the installation of street name signage. Please note that signage installation incurs additional fees, which will be communicated as part of the process.

Time frames
