Illegal Parking
Illegal Parking
We investigate illegally parked vehicles that pose risks and cause frustration for other road users.
You can easily access the NSW parking rules on the NSW Government website. This resource provides all the information you need to understand and follow parking regulations in New South Wales.
What you need to know
- For a vehicle to be considered illegally parked, the vehicle must have a registration plate. If it does not have a registration plate it will be considered abandoned.
- In most cases, a parking fine or notification will be placed on the vehicles at the time of the offence. Alternatively, some fines may be issued by mail, sent by Revenue NSW on behalf of the City of Newcastle. If your fine is mailed, you should receive it within seven days of the parking offence.

Raise a request
Before you begin
- Have the details of the vehicle ready - registration, make, model, colour. This information helps us correctly identify the vehicle.
- Be specific about date, time and if the vehicle is regularly parked illegally.
- When lodging your request, you will have the option to attach photos or other supporting documents.
Location matters!
Providing specific details about the location of the vehicle helps us locate and address it quickly. Please include cross streets, house numbers, or identifying landmarks.
Next steps
- You'll receive an acknowledgement with your request number.
- Your request will be reviewed and prioritised. A parking officer will visit the location and appropriate enforcement action will take place in the form of a fine or a caution. If there are no vehicles parked illegally upon our arrival, we may arrange for future patrols of the area.
- Once your request has been completed, you will receive a notification.
Time frames
- Requests for parking enforcement will be attended based on a priority assessment, with the aim to attend all requests within 24-36 hrs.
- Key safety and accessibility requests will be prioritised over general enforcement matters.
